On Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September in Castellamonte (TO) the third and last special event of the Festival della Reciprocità 2024 is scheduled, namely the 1st edition of the ‘Festival della Musica Popolare - Costantino Nigra’ as part of the 63rd International Ceramics Exhibition.
The Festival sees the artistic direction of Ambrogio Sparagna, one of Italy’s best known and influential ethnomusicologists. He came to Canavese for the 2023 edition of the Festival della Reciprocità and fell in love with it, giving the idea of an event in these lands where Costantino Nigra was born. Nigra was a figure who dedicated himself to the research and collection of popular songs that flowed into the anthology I canti popolari del Piemonte (a milestone in the field of Italian anthropological and philological studies), as well as being one of the most significant personalities of the Italian Risorgimento, Minister and Ambassador of the Cavour Government.
An initiative that pays homage to Costantino Nigra not only as an important personality of the Italian Risorgimento, but above all as a scholar to whom we owe the rediscovery of a strong interest in Italian popular traditions. Many protagonists will animate these two days under the banner of tradition and, above all, of confrontation: there will in fact be groups coming not only from Piedmont but also from other Italian regions, to bring the voices and songs of their territories to Castellamonte.
