The charismatic Italian-British conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, who has been absent from the Concerti del Lingotto season since 2018, returns to lead the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, a forty-year-old ensemble that brings together instrumentalists from all over Europe.
The all-20th-century program evokes the spirit of American jazz, from Milhaud’s ballets La création du monde and Bernstein’s Fancy Free to Gershwin’s Variations on I Got Rhythm.
The highlight of the evening is Saint-Saëns’ whimsical and sometimes unpredictable Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 22, which Pappano presents with the brilliant and flexible piano playing of Bertrand Chamayou, the only four-time winner of the French “Victoires de la Musique” award and a guest in the season in 2016.
