Pinerolo, key and bridle of Italy for 120 years 1536-1574, 1630-1696, 1798-1814 was ‘fortress of France’. Under the French rule, Pinerolo was transformed into a fortified city, an image handed down to us by 17th-century iconography. The citadel also became a French state prison where personalities such as Fouquet, the French finance Minister, who was escorted by d’Artagnan and the Musketeers and the mysterious personage who went down in history as the ‘Iron Mask’, around whom rumours circulate, none of which are sufficiently certain.
This walking tour will introduce you to: places, people and anecdotes linked to this historical period.
