The term mafia refers generically to various criminal organisations. Not only the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, therefore, but also the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta, the Neapolitan Camorra, the Apulian Sacra Corona Unita, to stay in Italy.

This lecture-show aims to shed light on the peculiarities of each mafia, clarifying its origins, structure, and mode of action. When the mafias are born, how they are organised, how they kill, where and how they infiltrate, how affiliation works, what role women play, what trafficking is the most profitable and how much the mafias earn; and also how the mafia is fought, who is the repentant and who is the collaborator of justice, what civil society can do to fight organised crime.
