COMUNE DI VIDRACCO

Comune
The municipality of Vidracco sits firmly in the embrace of the Val Chiusella, brushed by the waters of Lake Gurzia, a lake basin created in 1922 by a damming of the Chiusella stream.
The area where Vidracco stands is mentioned in a document from the early 1000s when King Arduino donated the valley to the church of Ivrea. In the 1500s, the valley became a point of reference and wealth for its mineral deposits as well as an important presence of pastures and mountain pastures, characteristics that made the inhabitants of the time economically autonomous with respect to other territories.
It is precisely a product of agriculture that this place wants to focus on today, taking a cue from the past and returning to being the land of apples. Numerous qualities of the fruit have been chosen as an original form of public greenery, starting with the ’fuminel’, a green apple with reddish streaks. The spring blossoming is an authentic spectacle.
But the wonders of the area can be appreciated every day by following the various itineraries, starting with the ’Sentiero dell’uomo’, a two-kilometre walk along the lake. On the flat route, you will come across huts for birdwatchers and signs with information on the flora and fauna in the area.
The Monti Pelati Nature Reserve, included in the Natura 2000 Network as a Site of Community Interest of the European Union, is well worth a visit. On its highest hill is the Cives Tower, dating back to the 12th century and probably built to defend the entire valley. The Reserve offers excursions of geological, mineralogical and naturalistic interest.
One last curiosity, in Vidracco stands The Temple of Humanity, a large underground construction excavated by hand in the rock by members of the Damanhur Federation communities, which covers an area of 850,000 cubic metres arranged on five levels and a depth of 72 metres.
