On 10 February, Italy celebrates Remembrance Day, established in 2004 to preserve and renew the memory of the tragedy of the foibe and the Giuliano-Dalmatian exodus, one of the most complex chapters in 20th-century European history, in the context of the Second World War and the immediate post-war period, within a border area marked by deep political, national and ideological divisions.

Between 1944 and 1956, no fewer than 250,000 people left the territories of Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia, and Turin proved to be one of the cities most willing to welcome them.

The photographic exhibition From Exiles to Citizens is a window into a community that stubbornly preserves the memory of its origins. At the same time, it allows second and third generations of exiles to reflect on their recent history, measure the progress made thanks to sacrifice and commitment, and, while keeping personal, family and community memories intact, historicise the collective memory.
