The Castle was built in 1358 at the behest of Amadeo VI of Savoy, the Conte Verde, as a symbol of the Savoy dominion over Ivrea and Canavese. Four massive circular towers characterise the structure, located next to the cathedral and the bishop’s palace.
The castle reopens on July 20 2024 after a long period of closure, during which major restoration work was carried out by the Municipality of Ivrea-owner of the property-with guided tours allowing visitors to explore the large courtyard, some of the cells dating back to the period when the castle was used as a prison, and to climb the patrol walkways, which have never before been open to the public. From the top you can admire a splendid view of the city, the Eporedonian Morainic Amphitheater and let your gaze run from the Canavese to the mouth of the Aosta Valley.
