The road was built between 1962 and 1963 as an extension to the route that already reached Rochemolles, in order to enable summer skiing on the glacier – a practice that is no longer possible today. Although the route is fully passable by car, the poor road surface makes it more difficult in some sections. It winds through increasingly lunar landscapes as the altitude increases. This Alpine pass, located in the Cottian Alps between Punta Sommeiller and Rognosa d’Etiache, marks the border between Italy and France. The views are stunning.
Open to motorised traffic from 11 July to 30 September 2026.
Closed: Tuesdays and Thursdays
