The construction of the Abbey Monastery of Casanova began in the mid 12th century, following a donation by the marquises of Saluzzo in favour of the Cistercian monks. From that moment on, the monks’ commitment and work for the recovery of the territories and the aspect of religious life, together with that of politics, grew, making it a very important reference point, not only for Piedmont, but also beyond the borders.
The decline began in the mid-1600s, due to an initial sacking that was followed by others until the suppression of the monastery itself by Pope Pius VI, decreed on 3 April 1792, as a result of which the abbey church became a parish church
