Dr Jekyll and Miss Hyde is our reflection on homosexuality, on the struggle that homosexuals must endure in order to accept their own inclinations and, in doing so, live their lives in peace.
It is almost a parody of Stevenson’s famous novel: somewhere between irony and social commentary, between drama and variety show, it recounts the dramatic journey towards the acceptance of homosexuality. It is a monologue but also a dialogue between the ‘he’ and the ‘she’ within the character. It is a parade of the characters he recalls having shaped his story. It is the birth of a drag queen: the make-up, the songs, the costumes and the liberating encounter with the audience; and it is also the end of a torment, a nerve-wracking attempt at repression.
Provocative and even scandalous, Dr Jekyll and Miss Hyde is a journey into the erotic fantasies of a homosexual who has had to repress his urges. Lyrical and dreamlike, it is the hope that a place and a time ‘where it is finally possible’ might exist.
