The exhibition focuses on the book, written by Gauguin after his first trip to Tahiti, ‘The Diary of Noa Noa’ enriched with beautiful woodcuts illustrating the texts and printed by his friend, Daniel de Monfreid.
This book, produced on the occasion of his return to Paris after his first stay in Tahiti, recounts life in the Polynesian islands, the myths and ancestral beliefs that punctuated the rhythms of daily life. By mixing the tales of Tehuana, his young Tahitian companion, with sources and news from travel books, he succeeded in producing a work that caused a sensation and brought him to the attention of the Parisian world of the time.
Accompanying these splendid works by Gauguin is an oil painting entitled Tahitiana, attributed to Gauguin, painted around 1891 and coming, together with a precious watercolour - Polynesian Landscape with Hut - from the prestigious collection of the famous art critic Giovanni Testori and Alain Toubas, from the Compagnia del Disegno in Milan.
