The Hannibal Sky Marathon holds significant historical importance, as highlighted in the book Hannibal and the Alpine Celts by Sisto and Simone Merlino, which documents the route taken by Hannibal during his epic crossing of the Alps.

This race allows participants to run on trails set against a landscape and cultural backdrop unique to the Alps, where altitude, wind, intense sunshine, snow and ice dominate, in an unspoilt environment.

The event forms part of the IUTA Oxyburn 2026 Ultra Trail Grand Prix circuit and is characterised by often challenging weather conditions, requiring specific preparation, the use of suitable equipment and a strong capacity for self-reliance.

There are three distances on offer:

Ultra - 52 km (elevation gain 4250 m), maximum altitude 3538 m

Marathon - 42.2 km (elevation gain 3500 m), maximum altitude 3305 m

Race - 24 km (elevation gain 1000 m), maximum altitude 2100 m

The Via di Annibale Sky Marathon offers a unique high-mountain experience, where history, nature and personal challenge intertwine in an unforgettable adventure: each distance invites participants to push beyond their limits.

Running The Via di Annibale Sky Marathon means tackling significant altitudes across glaciers and snowfields, navigating highly technical sections with fixed ropes and chains to aid passage, whilst forests and pastures offer an experience in an unspoilt environment. The excitement builds as you run through landscapes stretching from Monviso to the Po Valley, all the way to the Ligurian Apennines, passing by the Barre des Ecrins, the Gran Casse, the Gran Motte, Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.

No mobile phone or internet coverage along the entire route.
