Culture & Tradition

Against the medieval backdrop of its 14th-century Porta Tower, the small village in the Canavese region is once again hosting its traditional 14th-century historical re-enactment, inspired by the Statutes of 1352.

Now in its 44th year, the Oglianico Historical Re-enactment is more vibrant than ever.

The re-enactment itself will begin, as is traditional, on Friday 1 May with the Calendimaggio: it is on this occasion that the Consul and other historical figures will be elected, as stipulated in the Statutes of the Oglianico community.

The highlight will be on Sunday 10 May with the Ides of May: the medieval festival that will transform the village streets into an ancient hamlet for the whole day, with music, dancing, jugglers, acrobats and the medieval market.

Much attention will be focused on the 10th ‘Medieval Cooking Tournament, MESSER CHEF’: aspiring chefs will have to try their hand at preparing delicious dishes using ingredients and tools from days gone by.

• Friday 1st, afternoon: Calendimaggio, presentation of historical figures and the raising of the Maypole

• Saturday 2nd, from 7.00 pm: inn open and Occitan dances

• Sunday 3rd, afternoon/evening: Canavese wine tastings within the walls of the ricetto

• Friday 8th, 8.00 pm: Medieval Dinner

• Saturday 9th: everyone... and only in costume... for an evening of yesteryear

• Sunday 10th, from morning to evening: Idi di Maggio, Medieval Festival, Medieval Cooking Competition and... the grand finale... with the Calata del Maggio.
