Culture & Tradition

In the heart of Borgo Campidoglio, a historic working-class neighborhood dating back to the late nineteenth century, contemporary art meets popular memory and transforms the streets into an open-air art gallery.

This is where the MAU-Museum of Urban Art was born and has grown, a project unique in Italia that over time has played a decisive role in the cultural regeneration of the district, bringing color, creativity, and new narratives into public space.

Today the neighborhood hosts more than 200 permanent works, including murals, installations, and site-specific interventions created by Italian and international artists. This widespread heritage interacts with the historic architecture and the social identity of the area, offering visitors an immersive experience that blends art, history, and community.

To explore this open-air museum, the guided tour series A Sunday at the MAU leads residents and visitors through alleys, courtyards, and painted façades, telling the story of the neighborhood’s transformation and the meaning behind the artworks. The visit becomes a journey through time and space: from the district’s working-class past to its current cultural vocation, showing how public art can serve as a tool for memory, participation, and urban regeneration.

Meeting point in front of the churchyard of St Alfonso Church (Via Netro 3).
