November 1932. Max Eisenstein, a Jew, and Martin Schulse, a German, business partners in San Francisco and close friends, go their separate ways. Martin returns to Germany with his wife and children, and the two begin exchanging letters, which are soon overshadowed by the dark clouds of history: in 1933, Hitler comes to power and Martin is seduced by Nazi ideology. Martin does not change his attitude even when Max, in desperation, urges him to watch over his sister Griselle, an Austrian actress who was Martin's lover and who, despite the warnings she received, still wanted to perform in Berlin.
