The Museum dedicates a new exhibition to Guido Rey, a multifaceted figure at the crossroads of mountaineering, photography and literature.
The title of the exhibition, curated by Mattia Gargano and Veronica Lisino, recalls Rey's definition as an amateur, a term that in the late 19th and early 20th centuries indicated someone who dedicated himself to an activity purely as a pastime. Being an amateur allowed him the expressive freedom to move naturally between drawing, writing and photography, different languages used as filters to distance himself from reality and project himself into an “other world”: both the experience of the mountains and the intimacy of the family scenes portrayed in his pictorialist photographs constitute a refuge from city life for Rey.
