Torino 1946 - 2026. Ottant'anni dal primo voto delle donne

Bardonecchia
Culture & Tradition

To mark the 80th anniversary of women’s first vote in Italy – a historic milestone that saw female citizens take part for the first time in the 1946 Constituent Assembly elections, the constitutional referendum and local elections – the Metropolitan City of Turin is once again presenting a re-run of the photographic exhibition “Turin 1946–2016. Seventy years since women first voted'.

The exhibition, which was a great success ten years ago, is being revived today to mark an epoch-making transition: women’s participation in voting was not merely a political act, but a revolutionary event for social customs, experienced with an enthusiasm and hope that shines through clearly in every photograph.

The historical images form part of a private collection and were saved from oblivion by the collector Franco Senestro, who purchased them in 1983 when, following the closure of the editorial offices of the ‘Gazzetta del Popolo’, the newspaper’s furnishings, archives and various materials were put up for sale.

During the Easter holidays, the travelling exhibition will move to the Palazzo delle Feste in Bardonecchia.
