MAU-Museum of Urban Art in Torino presents Art beat. The Electrocardiogram of the Soul by Mirco Andreis, which invites visitors to follow the rhythm evoked by its title and explore the emotional dimension of experience through the heartbeat.
Born in Rivoli in 1977, Andreis creates sculptures and light and kinetic installations, reclaiming objects from the past and reinterpreting their functions and meanings. His practice brings together craftsmanship and imagination: gears, vacuum tubes and metal fragments are reassembled into works that come alive through light and movement. The objects retain their rust and signs of wear while taking on unexpected, sometimes anthropomorphic forms that lend themselves to different interpretations.
The reuse of obsolete technologies also offers an opportunity to reflect on our relationship with progress and the contradictions of a society increasingly connected and dependent on machines.
For this exhibition, the artist is also creating a new installation at the MAU Gallery: four antique sewing machines use red thread to trace the line of a heartbeat on a white ribbon. The rhythm of the machines meets that of the heart, giving tangible form to the exhibition’s title.
The heartbeat motif also extends into the urban space through Ars Artis, a light artwork by Andreis included in the Luci d’Artista programme. The work continues the exploration begun with Heart Art Earth, installed on the façade of Torino’s Circolo degli Artisti.
