A powerful contemporary reworking of the myth of Antigone that transposes Sophocles’ tragedy into the heart of the conflicts of our time.
Antigone becomes a young woman from a war-torn region, determined to assert the universal right to burial and remembrance in the face of all logic of power. Creon takes on the traits of a contemporary political leader who justifies violence through the language of security and propaganda, whilst Ismene becomes the voice of all the victims and survivors of today’s wars.
In a minimalist stage setting, filled with images, sounds and an intense physical performance, the production constructs a secular ritual on the theme of civil disobedience, exploring the relationship between the individual and the state, compassion and the law, memory and erasure.
