The European Space Agency's (ESA) Rosetta mission was the first and so far only space probe to enter orbit around the nucleus of a comet and land a scientific module on its surface. The journey through interplanetary space lasted 10 years, during which the mission control team had to come up with ever-new engineering and operational solutions to get the spacecraft to its target. Once the comet was reached, the most difficult phase began: navigating close to the active nucleus, a challenge never before faced in the history of space exploration.
