Les Modernes. From Matisse to Bacon

From 02/10/2026 to 14/02/2027
Culture & Tradition

Sixty works recount the 20th century through its leading figures and the place where it all began: the atelier.

The exhibition Les Modernes. From Matisse to Bacon offers a fascinating journey through 20th-century painting, exploring the evolution of modern European art.

Through a selection of works by undisputed masters such as Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Derain, Dubuffet, Lam, Hartung, Hantaï, Bacon and many others, the exhibition highlights the profound transformations in the artistic language of the last century: from the quest for purity of form and colour to the dramatic tensions of Expressionism and post-war figurative art.

Les Modernes offers an unmissable opportunity to explore the aspects of creative freedom and aesthetic revolution that shaped twentieth-century art. Some of the works on display in the exhibition directly evoke the studio – a pivotal space, the very heart of creation and experimentation, but also an intimate setting and a place for dialogue and interaction between artists.

In collaboration with the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon.
