It was the late 1950s and the start of the economic boom; Italy was brimming with a new vitality, full of confidence and hope for the future. Domenico Modugno captured that momentum in song; with his voice and talent, he managed to give voice to that collective desire for rebirth, whilst remaining aware of its fragility. Mario Perrotta’s show, winner of the 2025 Ubu Award for Best Sound Design, tells the story of Mr Volare, born in a Puglia still far removed from international tourism, who set out to become an actor and went on to become a symbol of freedom and light-heartedness.
