A travelling show comprising seven scenes that recount the folk tales handed down through the centuries, centring on the ‘Masche’: these were women – though at times also men, known as ‘mascot’ – who possessed knowledge of the properties of herbs.
Their stories emerged at a time when hunger and poverty reigned supreme. There was a need to distract the population from their real suffering and to create a scapegoat – the ‘masche’, to be precise, some of whom were tortured and later burnt at the stake.
