The charm of Exilles, which is still characterised by its medieval stronghold dating back to the 13th century, can be seen when crossing its courtyards and in the passages between one alley and another that lead into the heart of a village with an ancient flavour.
The ExillesCittà event recounts a festive day at the turn of the 19th and early 20th century, celebrating a very special event. In the last years of the 19th century, in fact, Exilles was the most populated village in the Upper Susa Valley, with about 3,000 inhabitants, including 1,000 military personnel living in the Fortress, which is why it was elevated to the rank of 'City' by Royal Decree of Umberto I.
Activities, wealth and liveliness flourished thanks to trade and the artisans who provided the Fort and its inhabitants with all the comforts and conveniences: shoemaking factories, tailors, shirt makers, barbers, washerwomen, a dozen public establishments including taverns, hotels and inns.
