MAUTO presents an exhibition offering a comprehensive overview of photographs, videos and sculptures, bringing together the work of 40 artists – from Eugène Atget to the most recent developments in post-photography – through photographs, videos and sculptures that portray the car as the central figure in the visual culture of the last 150 years. The exhibition is enriched by a selection of exceptional limited-edition supercars, from the 1980s to the early decades of the 21st century, which broadens the exploration of the relationship between mass production and exclusivity, demonstrating how, even in the automotive industry, limited production becomes an expression of research, innovation and uniqueness.
The project explores the principle of seriality: variations, accumulations, repetitions, fragmentations and dissections of the image become tools through which to interpret the relationship between the car, architecture, the city, the landscape and design. From the historical avant-garde’s fascination with the machine to the gradual democratisation of the car in the second half of the twentieth century, the exhibition traces the evolution of a subject that has accompanied the transformations of contemporary society and which photography has interpreted as a symbol of progress, freedom, consumption, desire and identity.
