A character on the fringes of the classic takes centre stage. It is Tubal, Shylock’s friend, who guides the audience through *The Merchant of Venice*.

The Teatro Incontro in Pinerolo is staging *Shylock*, starring Mauro Parrinello: in Gareth Armstrong’s adaptation, the Shakespearean story is retold through a voice that is usually secondary. Amidst irony, transformations and dialogue with the audience, the many interpretations of Shylock emerge, alongside themes of intolerance, loneliness and prejudice.

An encounter with Shakespeare that invites us to look beyond labels and to question the stories we have inherited.
