Between the streets of the Balon, the space in Via Borgo Dora 3/0 has been reborn: it had been disused since 2020 and unites the former Gelateria Popolare premises and two adjacent warehouses: a new social and community house, Jigeenyi, opens here.
Jigeenyi means ‘women’ in the Wolof language, spoken in Senegal, Gambia and Mauritania: it is an intercultural space that gives space to African cuisines and to the empowerment of women through cultural, educational and work paths.
Jigeenyi is located in the streets of the Balon, in the beating heart of Borgo Dora: it will host festivals, workshops, concerts, DJ sets, but also book presentations, cultural meetings, screenings and activities for children, amateur African cooking classes and professional cooking courses for women and vulnerable people.
A weekend of initiatives is planned to celebrate the event:
- Friday 11, 6 p.m.: sounds by Mastaced and DJ Noname; 9 p.m.: live by Ibson Daone; to follow: Abu Samb Band
- Saturday 12, 6 pm: guest Nonsonopoetica; 9 pm: Narconauta
- Sunday 13, 6 p.m.: small street concert by Melo-coton
During the three days of the opening, open from 10 a.m. to midnight with breakfasts, lunches, aperitifs and African recipes: every day a different dish celebrating the different origins of the staff members, offering a journey through Senegal, Gambia, Congo, Colombia, Iran, Brazil and Italy.
