Freely adapted from the famous Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale, this work of moving visual art by the Teatro dei Colori is enriched with new scenographic and visual elements.
Developed using the technique of black theatre, with images evoking Kinetic Art and the iconography of German Expressionist cinema, the show’s visual score is enriched by mime, storytelling, and a set that assembles and disassembles - like a giant toy - to the flute score composed by Maestro Paolo Totti.
A show with a playful rhythm, where the narrative, in a simple sequence of five scenes, punctuates the movement of the images and the performers’ bodies on stage. The music becomes a character in its own right, giving rise to a colourful dancing figure - a Futurist marionette, a ‘Fool’ - who will bring the joy of colour, and the chaos of life and art, to triumph over the strict laws of a black-and-white city. And then there are streets, lanterns and buildings, as in a high-contrast frame, made up of broken lines and visual rhythms, like a nocturnal tale where the impossible is always just round the corner, in a science-fiction city that mirrors the mountain cave - mysterious places, yet also places of courage, of the allure of the fantastical, of the discovery of the power of art, of dreams and of play.
Towards the end, the story takes an unexpected turn and deliberately diverges from the original, because the true protagonist of this tale is not just a magical piper, but the free and unbridled imagination of children.
