To mark the 23rd National Urban Trekking Day, a guided walk entitled ‘In the Footsteps of St Francis’.
The initiative forms part of the celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death (1226–2026) and has as its theme ‘In Search of the Essential’: the central theme is the convergence of poetry and spirituality, art, history and nature.
The route is divided into eight stages. It begins at Mr Fijodor’s mural *The Slow Fox and the Wise Snail*, a celebration of taking one’s time on the journey; it continues through the historic centre to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Confraternity and the model of nineteenth-century Volpiano. The route then climbs along the Vauda paths to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Vineyards, up to the viewpoint where a CAI information panel helps you identify the peaks. Passing by the Chapel of St John, you finally reach the Franciscan Oasis and return to the starting point.
Along the way, readings from the ‘Canticle of the Creatures’ and on the life of St Francis will accompany participants as they explore the area and reflect on the relationship between humankind and nature.
