Comune di Monteu da Po

Comune
Monteu da Po is a village nestled among the hills of northern Monferrato and washed by the Po River.
The name Monteu may derive from the Latin ’Monticolus’ or the more recent ’Monsacutus’. In the Piedmontese language, "monté da Pò" means "to climb (go up) the Po".

The town became notorious when the ruins of the Roman colony of Industria-Bodincomacus came to light in the hamlet of San Giovanni. The site includes a Roman forum, a temple dedicated to Isis and the remains of shops: all this is but a small part of the large city of Industria, first mentioned by Pliny the Elder, who described it as an important port on the Po.

In the Middle Ages, in 1186, in a papal bull by Pope Urban III, Mounteu da Po was identified in the two parish churches of ’Plebem Monticali’ (probably today’s centre). (probably today’s centre) and "Plebem Dustriam" (today’s locality of San Giovanni).
With the Peace of Cherasco, Monteu da Po was incorporated into the Duchy of Savoy and enfeoffed to the Counts of Brusasco.

In Monteu, in addition to the ruins of Industria, it is worth visiting the church of San Giovanni Battista, the oldest, near the town hall, which was burnt down and rebuilt in the 17th century. Also of interest is the 16th-century church of San Grato, at the foot of the hill, which was the parish church until 1636.
