The history of this magnificent series of late Renaissance Tuscan paintings, divided between the parish church and the Chapel of the Pietà in Reano, is inextricably linked to that of the illustrious Dal Pozzo Della Cisterna family, who were feudal lords of Reano from 1561 onwards.
They were purchased in 1598 by Carlo Antonio Dal Pozzo, Archbishop of Pisa and privy councillor to Grand Duke Francesco I, following the bankruptcy of the Acciaiuoli bank in Florence. The public will have the opportunity to admire these 16th-century paintings, which form part of the famous Pietrafitta cycle and represent one of Piedmont’s most important artistic treasures. The sketches for these paintings are housed at the British Museum in London and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
As well as admiring the extraordinary paintings, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the Princes Dal Pozzo della Cisterna, a noble family who owned the 13th-century Reano Castle and the fiefdom from 1581 to 1876, the year of the death of their last member: Queen Maria Vittoria of Spain.
