Basilica dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro (Mauriziana)

Church

The grand church of the Knightly Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, at the junction of Via Milano and Via della Basilica, right in the centre of Torino, is a Greek cross-plan building, with its major axis set at an angle to the street grid in which it is situated. The nave, surmounted by a large frescoed dome with an elliptical plan, ends in a short chancel, behind which lies the circular choir, surmounted by a frescoed vault.

The Basilica Mauriziana is open for worship and, from 2027, for ‘Passepartout’ guided tours, with a programme designed to enable the public to learn about the building’s history and its artistic heritage. The tour will take visitors through the basilica’s various spaces, from the church to the sacristy, showcasing the liturgical vestments and processional regalia, right up to the choir and the frescoed dome. This is an opportunity to explore the various stages in the basilica’s history, its connection with the Mauritian Order and the building’s role in the city’s history.
