Evolving Soundscapes

The music and performance programme that accompanies and expands the Haori exhibition kicks off. Men's clothes from the early 20th century narrate Japan.

Starting from elements that refer to a common imaginary, linked to a traditional and romantic vision of Japan, the public programme explores a different contemporaneity, following, as always, an original path to the discovery of the most heterogeneous experimentations.

- 11th April - Tsubasa Hori: Japanese bells, small drums and voice weave delicate and incisive incursions. The music of Japanese percussionist Tsubasa Hori oscillates between traditional taiko and contemporary experimental music. Thanks to this combination, Hori feels at home on the underground circuit as well as in major dance, theatre and music productions. In his live improvisations, he enters into dialogue with the architecture and acoustics of the hall: movement, energy and maximum concentration play a key role. Free admission on the occasion of the opening of the Haori exhibition.

- 9th May - Mizu: An exploration of the possibilities of the body and the cello. From evanescent harmonic textures to rich orchestral nuances, Mizu builds expansive soundscapes through her unmistakable approach to the cello: her layered compositional style, combining recorded sounds of her own instrument with electronic manipulations and experimental production, explores her identity as a trans woman and her musical identity, from Juilliard-trained cellist to experimental composer and performer. On stage MIZU's work takes on new life, questioning and challenging the boundaries between concert, theatre and performance art through electrifying and cathartic staging.

- 1st July - FUJI|||||||||||TA: Suspended soundscapes investigating the unexplored sounds of nature. FUJI|||||||||||TA is a sound artist based in Japan. In his practice he interfaces with natural phenomena such as air and minimal sounds, in response to his interest in giving voice to unexplored sounds, inspired by Japanese classical music (gagaku). In 2009, he built a pipe organ in reduced form, with which he can present his work live.

Participation is included in the entrance fee to the exhibition, which will close at 7.30 p.m. on the occasion of the performance. The public programme of the exhibition ‘Haori’, curated by Chiara Lee and Freddie Murphy.
