Lakecia Benjamin is certainly the most interesting saxophonist and composer to have emerged from the American scene in recent years: her blend of r&b, hip hop, jazz and funk has won over live audiences everywhere, and although she has produced some wonderful records with great guests, it is in the concert dimension that her energy is fully released.
The repertoire starts with the album Phoenix (2023), a social commentary on life in the United States and at the same time a personal journey undertaken after the very serious car accident that put her life in danger in 2021 and from which she was reborn, like a phoenix.
Balancing tradition and contemporaneity, Benjamin is open to all the musical forms that she has absorbed and played in her New York, from the rhymes of black poetry to those of Kendrick Lamar to all the various declinations of Latin music.
The concert becomes an immersive ritual of spirituality, energy and rhythm.
