The round table is a reflection on the craft of type design as a situated practice: the guests have followed different paths, keeping type design at the centre of their discipline. They have gathered experience both locally and abroad, forging relationships and collaborations with the aim of gathering knowledge and giving it back to the city.
The central theme of the conversation is craftsmanship, not as nostalgia but as a contemporary tool: sign painting and movable type printing are part of a constellation of techniques, tools and gestures that permeate places of resistance to standardisation, spaces where typographic design is measured against the material, time and the city itself.
This will be followed by a screening of My Pillowbook, a performance by Caterina Santullo, a type designer working between Turin and The Hague.
Speakers: Davide Tomatis and Gabriele Fumero, lecturers, graphic and type designers; Giulia Zanzarella, graphic and type designer; Rocco Barbaro and Joe Miceli, sign painters and type designers at Il Letterista.
