Culture & Tradition

The Museo Egizio welcomes Angelika Lohwasser for a new event in the series of lectures organised with ACME-Friends and Collaborators of the Museo Egizio.

The lecture deals with the figure of the god Osiris in the kingdom of Kush during the first millennium BC, where he assumed both the role of god of the afterlife and that of deceased king, thus becoming a key element in the legitimisation of Kushite royalty.

In the Meroitic pyramids, he appears as a fusion between the deity and the earthly ruler, while the small bronze statues found in the temples of Amun indicate the existence of specific rituals dedicated to him. Sources also show a strong connection with Amun: the latter chooses and crowns the king, while Osiris, as a divine ancestor, welcomes him into the dynastic line.

Scholar Angelika Lohwasser, an Egyptologist trained in Vienna and now a full professor in Münster, has dedicated her research to the cultures of ancient Sudan and late Egypt, focusing in particular on Kushite royalty, its deities and archaeological contexts such as the Sanam cemetery and the Bayuda desert.

Event in English with simultaneous translation into Italian in the hall, also available via live streaming on YouTube.
