An evening dedicated to Hermann Buhl, one of the most emblematic figures in the history of modern mountaineering.
The screening of the film Hermann Buhl. Beyond every summit, directed by Werner Bertolan and produced in Italia in 2025, traces the life and achievements of the Austrian mountaineer, with particular attention to his historic ascent of Nanga Parbat in 1953.
Through archive footage, testimonies and recollections, the documentary recounts the extraordinary climb on 3 July 1953, when Buhl made the first ascent of Nanga Parbat - the ninth highest mountain in the world - solo and without the use of artificial oxygen, in a single feat that took about 41 hours of ascent and descent in extreme conditions, marking a turning point in the history of mountaineering.
The evening will be presented by mountaineering historian and journalist Roberto Mantovani, one of the most authoritative scholars in the field and author of numerous essays on the history of high altitude mountaineering and the evolution of climbing techniques. Mantovani will introduce the film and guide the audience through the key moments in Buhl's life, highlighting the technical, psychological and historical exceptionality of a feat that still fascinates and intrigues mountain enthusiasts today.
The screening aims to offer viewers not only a biographical portrait of Buhl, but also an opportunity to reflect on the transformations of mountaineering in the 20th century and the relationship between man and mountain, between audacity and awareness.
