On the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Jaquerio, the Precettoria di Sant'Antonio di Ranverso offers a special immersive visit into the life of one of the greatest exponents of international Gothic in Piedmont, who left his signature and his greatest masterpiece in Ranverso.
Born around 1375 in Turin to a family with a long tradition in the practice of painting, he lived the first part of his life between continuous moves between Turin, Geneva, Thonon-les-Bains and other places beyond the Alps, working in the service of Amedeo VIII of Savoy and receiving commissions from religious institutions and important noble families. From 1429 onwards he lived permanently in Turin.
Of his vast production only very few works are documented. The first certain document is his signature, discovered only in 1914 on the frescoes in the Abbey of Sant'Antonio di Ranverso, which can be dated around 1410, a time when the artist must already have been the head of a large workshop.
The Ascent to Calvary is his masterpiece characterised by markedly realistic tones of cruelty and pain that make it a pictorial piece of great dramatic tension.
