The village of Sant’Ambrogio di Torino is transformed into a vast open-air stage for the Historical Re-enactment of the Battle of the Chiuse, one of the most eagerly awaited events of the summer in the Susa Valley: from 6.00 pm until late in the evening, the village streets will welcome visitors, families and history enthusiasts on an immersive journey amongst Lombards, Franks, merchants, musicians, falconers and warriors.
The event re-enacts one of the most significant episodes in the history of the Susa Valley: the Battle of the Chiuse, fought in 773 AD when Charlemagne’s army breached the Lombard defences, paving the way for the conquest of their kingdom.
Throughout the evening, the historic centre will come alive with scenes of medieval life, encampments, games, roaming musicians and performances. At the heart of it all will be the four taverns set up by the village’s historic neighbourhoods: Taverna delle Masche, Taverna delle Brayde, Taverna del Sole and Taverna del Falconero, each with its own menu inspired by medieval tradition and accompanied by wine, beer and specialities prepared by volunteers. A gastronomic journey that will allow visitors to discover the flavours, recipes and atmosphere of the past: once again, a distinctive feature will be the Balengu, the historic coin used to purchase food and drink at the taverns.
The most eagerly awaited moment will come at 10.45pm, when re-enactors will bring the Battle of the Chiuse to life, a spectacular historical re-enactment, after which the festivities will continue with medieval dances and moments of conviviality in the village squares.
Throughout the event, it will also be possible to visit the Giansone Museum.
