Presentation of the Colombano Romean Ecomuseum’s Cahier No. 34: Vauban at the Fort of Exilles. The final plans for the Sun King’s stronghold in the Dauphiné ‘this side of the mountains’, edited by Eugenio Garoglio and Massimo Garavelli.
The publication traces the history of Vauban’s planned projects for Exilles and the defence of the borders of the Upper French Dora Valley, prior to the Treaty of Utrecht which sanctioned its cession to the House of Savoy: a wealth of illustrations and partly unpublished documents – drawn from the French army archives at Vincennes dating from the late 17th to early 18th centuries – bear witness to the French’s last-ditch attempt to defend the Dauphiné territories on this side of the mountains and the end of the Escartons.
