The exhibition The Perceptible Softness of Color dedicated to Alfredo Billetto (Torino, 1932–2022), hosted in the Crypt of St Michele Arcangelo, features large-scale works from the 1970s that explore the history and culture of Torino and Italia during a decade defined by deep social, political, and labor tensions.
Rather than offering explicit reportage, Billetto’s paintings capture the emotional climate of the era through the very matter of painting: the plasticity of forms and the softness of color construct an intimate, universal space. Works like In Search of Man (1976) reflect collective disorientation and human perseverance amidst social conflict, conveying not a mere historical record, but the memory, fragility, and resilience of a restless yet forward-looking city.
