A major new exhibition dedicated to internationally renowned American artist Carrie Mae Weems, known for her photographic investigations into issues of cultural identity, sexism and class affiliation.
One hundred or so works have been selected for the exhibition, underlining Carrie Mae Weems' unique value in addressing the complexities and injustices of the world around us, rooting her photography in places often excluded from narratives: artist's studios, plantations in the southern United States, domestic spaces, and even the “invisible institutions” that arose as places of worship for the black community during oppression, juxtaposed with images of monuments and museums that have historically been places of exclusion.
At the centre of the exhibition is the new project Preach, created for this exhibition on an original commission, an ambitious and intense installation that traces religion and spirituality for Afro-descendant Americans across generations: the series celebrates the deep, passionate and joyful forms of worship that define the Weems' black church experience, while at the same time denouncing the violence and oppression that are inseparable elements of this history.
