The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an international initiative consisting of a friendly competition between cities around the world, with two objectives: to involve as many people as possible in data collection and to document the widest possible range of species in urban areas.

Researchers and members of the public work together to map urban biodiversity by uploading photos or audio recordings to the iNaturalist app within a set timeframe.

Once again this year, the Regional Museum of Natural Sciences is organising the challenge for the city of Torino: citizens can take part independently; uploading data to iNaturalist is simple and intuitive.

For those wishing to take advantage of the opportunity to learn new things and see biodiversity monitoring experts in action, the MRSN is organising a series of events: the bioblitzes, designed for all ages.

The bioblitzes on Sunday 26 are:

  • Parco Colonnetti, from 9.30am: plants, birds, butterflies and other pollinators, aquatic and terrestrial macro- and micro-invertebrates, lichens, mammals and alien species (registration required)
  • Basilica di Superga, 10am: botanical walk (registration required)
  • Parco Colonnetti, in the morning: the Torino-based group of Urban Sketchers joins the Challenge, sketching the landscape, the species and the atmosphere of the event live, complementing the scientific activities with a creative perspective
