What really makes an interior design project cohesive? In addition to the consistency of materials, it is colour that gives character and identity to the domestic space. Every architect and every historical period develops its own palette, in which floors, walls and ceilings are composed of recurring colours, materials and atmospheres.

I colori delle case. Milano Interiors 1923-1978 (The colours of homes. Milan Interiors 1923-1978) is the new book that author Orsina Simona Pierini presents in conversation with Elena Dellapiana and Sara Maragotto. The volume explores the colours of 20th-century Italian architecture, particularly those of Milanese homes. The research highlights how colour has been a central design tool, from the pastel tones and primary colours of early rationalism to the greens and browns of the war years, to the chromatic explosion of the post-war period and the more radical experiments of the 1960s and 1970s.
