After The Liar and Harlequin, Servant of Two Masters, Valerio Binasco returns to compete with Carlo Goldoni staging One of the last nights of Carnival: an affectionate and at the same time painful greeting from the great author to his Venetian audience.
But for Binasco, Goldoni is not only the master of comedy: he is a fine observer of the human soul, capable of revealing, behind his smile, the truth of relationships, hypocrisies, small daily deceptions. The director and artistic director of the Teatro Stabile di Torino sees Goldoni as surprisingly modern: comedy always arises from a fragility, from a “pathology” of life, and precisely for this reason he can still speak to us today.
Harlequin, Lelio, Anzoletto are together masks and men, living figures of a humanity that never truly changes. In Binasco's vision, comedy then becomes an act of love towards the theatre itself - that which is not satisfied with the past, does not measure its value with applause, but continues to question the present with the most direct and vital language there is: that of the stage.
