The subject matter is provided by the novel Triptych of Infamy by Pablo Montoya, a Colombian author expatriate in Europe.
The protagonists are three artists from the old continent working in the century of the Conquest. And the points of view change, suddenly it is no longer the other who is the object of our ‘discoveries’, but ourselves and our way of looking. And art sits in the dock, not just as a witness.
Among the works at the centre of the performance are 17 engravings describing the devastation of the so-called West Indies and the genocide then taking place, without the artist, Theodore de Bry, being a direct witness.
What is the effectiveness of art between reality and representation? And what does it mean to bear witness? What is the role of the artist when directly or indirectly witnessing genocide?
