Day 1: Arrival at Fenestrelle, the Fort, Usseaux... one of the most beautiful villages in Italy!
Autonomous arrival in Fenestrelle: the City of Forts. Here you will find numerous and ancient fortresses surrounding the imposing Fort, the wall of the Cottian Alps that rises up the mountain with its 4000 steps. Possibility to walk outside the Fort or to make a visit of about an hour (according to the times of the guided tours) inside the Fort San Carlo with its palaces, cellars and kitchens.
From Fenestrelle continue to Usseaux, passing through Pequerel along the path that joins the path of Thoughts
Free lunch. Arrival in Usseaux, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It will be like diving into an open-air museum: the wonderful murals painted on walls, doors and windows of houses, where animals, landscapes and the peasant life of yesteryear are depicted. The village is characterized by the typical houses in mountain style, wood and stone, scattered next to each other between narrow streets, between the stone washrooms and traditional craft shops, all in a natural environment with great charm.
Dinner and overnight.
2° day: Usseaux, Pian dell'Alpe and Assietta
Early departure for Pian dell'Alpe. Accompanied by the naturalistic guide, you continue your walk through the unspoilt nature of the Parks of the Cottian Alps, crossing along the route: the ruins of the heliographic station, a shelter building and then the fork to the Ciantiplagna Peak. The military road winds along the ridges offering breathtaking views moving on the side of Val Gardena where you can see two lakes: Lake Piccolo and then Lake Grande. It continues at high altitude meeting the Caserme del Gran Serin and then the famous Colle dell'Assietta, place of the famous battle that was fought on 19 July 1747 recounted in the traditional historical re-enactment on the occasion of the annual festival of Piedmont.
Arrival at Rifugio Casa Assietta, dinner and overnight in shared rooms.
3° day: Assietta, Pragelato
After breakfast at the Rifugio Casa Assietta, you will walk again on the military road in the direction of Col Blegier and Colle di Costapiana, meeting the junction for the suggestive Forte Gran Costa. A detour recommended to visit the remains of the fortification at the top and enjoy an exceptional panoramic view over Val Chisone and Val Troncea on one side and the Val di Susa, mountains and French glaciers on the other. The road continues by diving into typical and representative meadows of altitude that in spring are painted white: the alpine stars. The route continues between the hills of the chain passing through Col Lauson and Col Blegier, until you reach Monte Genevris and the remains of military shelters and then continue to the hill of Costapiana. Here we recommend a new small detour to the lighthouse of the Alpini for gidere of the scenic place. From the hill begins the descent towards Allevè taking the path of the Glorious Repatriation of the Waldensians (250 km through the Savoy crossed by the Waldensians in 1689) thus reaching Rivets. This village already in the municipality of Pragelato, is well recognizable thanks to the numerous works of art and murals that color and beautify the entrance. There are two museums here: Casa Escartons and the Costume Museum of Pragelato. In the village of Ruà there is the Natural Museum of the Val Troncea Nature Park, museums that are definitely worth a visit!
4 day: See you soon!
After breakfast, free time for a walk in the center of Pragelato that takes its name from the Piedmontese term Pragelà, "frozen meadow", as a testimony to the cold temperatures that characterize its winters. In 2006, on the occasion of the XX Winter Olympic Games, the town of Pragelato was the venue for the Nordic skiing competition.
