Salbertrand

Salbertrand

Salbertrand is already mentioned in diplomas and documents from the 11th century and developed thanks to the crossing of the Old French Road. The parish church of St John the Baptist is one of the most important sacred buildings in the upper Susa Valley with a prothyrum and stone portal by the stone mason Matteo Rude of Melezet. The interior is richly decorated with frescoes dating between the 14th and 16th centuries.

The mountain of Salbertrand has a wooded slope rich in fir trees that are the heart of the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand Natural Park, which extends on the north-facing side of the upper Susa Valley. Inside the park, the Colombano Romean Ecomuseum presents a ring-route that includes: the hydraulic mill, the former school, the communal oven of the hamlet of Oulme, the ancient charcoal pile and lime kiln, the 19th-century ice house with the adjoining supply pond and the smoke-sauna.
