Design
Destroyed by fire in 1936, the Teatro Regio reopened after various vicissitudes in 1973 at the hands of Carlo Mollino and became a symbol of his imaginative production. Mollino invented new forms for the theatre by implementing a daring confrontation between the new and the monumental, its origins in fact date back to 1740. The theatre's side walls are flexuous, characterised by a stellar design in brickwork that recalls the decorative geometries of Palazzo Carignano. Inside, the superb foyer is an aerial system of staircases and walkways. The shell roof is the work of engineer Felice Bertone. In the auditorium, the work coordinated by Roberto Gabetti and Aimaro Isola to improve the acoustics involved the radical transformation of the proscenium and the replacement of the panelling. The space in front of the main entrance is instead closed off by a gate designed by the artist Umberto Mastroianni.
