Torino a history of inclusivity
Torino a history of inclusivity
The City of Torino has a history of openness, inclusiveness and progress. These values are rooted in our culture and institutions. We are a city that has seen the birth of the movement and a great development in the field of LGBTQIA+ rights in recent years, with important steps forward in the fight against discrimination and the affirmation of gender equality.
The timeline of our City's history:
- The first Italian gay rights movement (F.U.O.R.I.) was born in Torino in 1971.
- In 1986, Ottavio Mai and Giovanni Minerba founded the international queer-themed film festival ‘From Sodom to Hollywood’, the longest running in Europe and one of the most important in the world.
- In 2001, the City of Torino established a specific office for LGBTQIA+ issues, the first in Italy.
- Plans are underway to open the first LGBTQIA+ Museum in Italy in Torino.
- In 2018, the Mayor of Torino registered the birth certificates of the children of three same-sex couples at the civil registry office. This is the first time in Italy that a mayor has made this choice (and taken the risk) without a court order.
- In 2011, Torino hosted the 15th annual conference of ILGA Europe, attended by 250 delegates.
- In 2019, ToHousing opens in Torino. It is a social co-housing specifically dedicated to LGBTQIA+ people in difficulty and extremely vulnerable. To date, it is the largest of its kind in Italy.
- In response to some needs of the LGBTQIA+ population, CasArcobaleno was founded in Torino in 2014.
- In 2022 Torino hosted the 29th EPOA General Assembly, which was attended by 170 delegates from all over Europe and North Africa.
